From Ashes to Oaks: Breathing New Life into Old Roots

A Creative Twist on Tree Planting at St Albans Cathedral

In a creative twist on tree planting, we recently planted a new oak tree within the hollowed stump of a dead ash tree in the grounds of St Albans Cathedral. Having supported the cathedral with their tree management for many years, we were delighted to be involved in such a thoughtful and unique planting project.

To prepare the space, we trimmed and shaped the old ash stump, chamfering the edges for a clean finish and sealing the base to prevent future root escape. This innovative approach transforms the stump into a natural planter, offering the young oak protection from animals that might otherwise nibble at a new sapling—without the need for artificial guards or cages. As the ash stump gradually decomposes, it will enrich the soil, feeding the oak with valuable nutrients and creating a hopeful, cyclical future.

Inspired by Nature: The Power of Nurse Logs

In forests, fallen trees play a crucial role in helping new plants grow. These “nurse logs” act as natural nurseries for seedlings, providing a sheltered microhabitat that supports biodiversity and resilience. As the wood breaks down, it releases nutrients, holds moisture, moderates temperature changes and offers structural support. Moss, fungi and leaf litter build up around the decaying trunk, creating conditions that help young trees establish strong, stable roots.

We brought this natural principle into the cathedral grounds, adapting the idea of a nurse log to an urban setting by using the hollow ash stump as an eco-friendly planting solution.

Why an Oak Inside an Ash Stump?

It’s a reasonable question: why not plant another ash? The answer lies in ecology and plant health. Soil pathogens often specialise in certain species. A young ash growing in an ash stump could be exposed to harmful diseases—particularly considering ash dieback and other pathogens that linger in the soil.

By choosing an oak sapling instead, we avoid ash-specific pathogens and give the young tree access to the nutrients and structure provided by the slowly decaying stump. This approach also mimics natural woodland regeneration, where a mix of species grows together, reducing competition and improving biodiversity.

Not all trees are suitable for this method, but we’re always happy to advise on the right species and approach for your landscape.

A Sustainable Idea for Urban and Garden Spaces

Using a decaying stump as a planter isn’t just environmentally friendly—it’s practical too. It reduces waste, avoids the need for manufactured materials, and reuses natural resources that would otherwise be removed. The stump also helps retain moisture, protect roots and slowly release nutrients as it breaks down.

As the oak grows stronger, the ash stump will continue to decompose, feeding the young tree and enriching the surrounding soil. It’s a beautiful example of circular ecology brought into a managed landscape.

Final Thoughts

Dead trees aren’t just lifeless—they’re life-givers. By using nurse log principles, we can help seedlings grow healthier, stronger and more resilient while supporting biodiversity and sustainability. The new oak in the ash stump at St Albans Cathedral is a small but powerful reminder that even in decay, nature is full of opportunities to nurture new life.

The team from Blue Tree did a great job pollarding our lime tree. Friendly, careful and efficient. Couldn't be better
A very friendly and professional company. I was very pleased when you checked the tree for life and sickness, and asked about its conservation status first. I felt that you do actually care about trees which is refreshing!
On the day of felling the team worked carefully and efficiently making minimal mess or disruption. You even cut up the wood for me to season for the fire. You also dealt very well with the enquiries from passers by about the tree works, explaining that it was dead and why it needed felling.
Thankyou!

They have just completed some work for us and we are happy to recommend them and we will use them again. (NB they like tea/coffee with 2 sugars!).

Nice bunch of guys - professional and friendly. Took down three trees and left piles of logs for us, as requested. Also reduced a conifer hedge (not planted by us!) that had got out of control -- it all vanished into the chipper. I'd definitely use them again.

Fred and his team were brilliant. Incredibly helpful, professional.
We needed tree survey mortgage report for a house we are buying. They understood the urgency and came to our rescue providing exemplary service and level of report. They also scheduled within a day or two the removal of the recommended trees.
All documents and works were carried out to an excellent standard for our Mortgage lenders.
I highly recommend The Blue Tree Company.

My tree is getting far too tall for a small garden. To avoid the potential fall and hit my neighbors’ houses/cars. I had it removed today by a fantastic crew from Blue Tree Company. They are wonderful people and did a great job. They kept the job site safe and clean. In addition , they went extra miles and made a table and six stools for me to remember my old tree. Thank you so much.

Blue Trees were recommended to me by a neighbour who has been using them for several years. I was impressed with the professionalism, knowledge and punctuality of the whole team-from Fred who came to quote, through to the three men who came to carry out the job. They worked quickly and tidily and made sure I was completely happy before leaving. I have no hesitation in recommending Blue Trees to family and friends and would certainly use them again in the future.

We have used Blue Trees on a number of occasions now and most recently yesterday to take down a tall tree. As ever they are very professional, neat and tidy and reasonably priced. We had requested they leave the wood with us and my husband would chainsaw it for our neighbours. The fact that they left the whole tree in very manageable chunks without being asked was a real bonus as it will save my husband a huge amount of time and effort. Thank you to all the team. We will use you again and would not hesitate to recommend you to others.

We employed the Blue Tree Company to remove a couple of Laurel Hedges and grind out the stump of a 30 year old Birch tree that we had felled last year all in preparation for new turfing. The guys turned up on time on the day as planned, carried out the works efficiently and when finished cleared up behind them.

We had an invoice query that was resolved promptly to our satisfaction.

All in all we had a very positive experience of The Blue Tree Company

Professional company from first contact. Quote provided on basis of photos during lockdown. Future appointment booked due to bird nesting season. Update email to confirm attendance/appointment time day before. 3 friendly capable staff Mark Callum and Brandon. Explained what they were doing reassured us. Cut very ugly tree to look as pleasing as possible from our side. Cleared up the site before leaving. Would definately recommend.
